Studies Showing Value of Multivitamins in AIDs Important To Everyone! Here’s Why.

Sam: Good afternoon everyone, this is .... Welcome to The Willner Window. For those of you who might be first-time listeners, the focus of this show is nutritional supplements–vitamins, herbs, homeopathic remedies–and their proper usage. With me this afternoon is . .
What do you want to start off with today, Don.  
Don: Well, Sam, we have a couple of blockbuster studies to tell you about this week.
One of the studies deals with the effect of multivitamin supplements on HIV, AIDs. The other study deals with children who have leukemia, and the benefits they derive from taking antioxidant supplements.
Now, as you will hear in a moment, both of these studies are exceedingly important to people with these two diseases. But, in my opinion, they are no less important to the rest of us, and I will explain why in just a moment.  
Sam: OK, let me tell you about the studies, first.
First, we have the study on AIDS. It was done in Tanzania, and involved over 1,000 pregnant women who were infected with HIV. They found that giving those women a multivitamin supplement–B vitamins, C and E–resulted in reduced laste-stage symptoms of the disease, delayed progression of the disease, and the ability to delay the initiation of antiretroviral therapy. The effect was greatest during the first two years.
The daily dose of multivitamins appeared to slow down the disease and cut the risk of developing AIDS in half.
The researchers said the recipients of the vitamin supplements tended to have higher levels of disease-fighting cells and lower levels of HIV virus particles in the blood.  
Don: Now, I think that is pretty impressive. If that does not make you sit up a take notice, it should.
Why? Here is the reason. We have had an ongoing debate with the anti- supplement people for years and years–those who always claim that vitamin supplements are a waste of money, and that taking anything more than the minimum daily requirement is merely a source of expensive urine.
Sam: We, on the other hand, have pointed out that the minimum daily requirements are merely the amounts of vitamins researchers think is necessary to prevent the development of actual vitamin deficiency diseases–diseases such as scurvy, rickets, beriberi, pellagra and so forth
