Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress in prostate cancer

New evidence suggests that oxidative stress has a link to the development and progress of prostate cancer. In this study, doctors measured antioxidants in the diet and signs of oxidative stress in the blood, urine, and prostate tissue of men with prostate cancer.
Men with prostate cancer who consumed the most antioxidants had fewer signs of lipid oxidation, which doctors measured by sampling the urinary level of 8-isoprostane; a marker for lipid oxidation. There was a direct link: each 10 percent increase in antioxidants in the diet reduced signs of oxidative stress by 1.1 percent.
Discussing the findings, doctors said this study demonstrated that increasing antioxidants in the diet can reduce oxidative stress in men with prostate cancer, which may help slow the progress of this condition.

Some critics of nutritional supplements have questioned, recently, whether or not antioxidant supplements are as beneficial as we initially thought. It is important to keep in mind that studies like this one continue to be published, demonstrating the value of antioxidant supplementation.
